Pond Algea Control

Algae can be a real problem if a pond is not properly set-up. New ponds are especially prone to algae problems because they often lack a proper balance of flora and fauna. However, there are several pond algae control methods that can help keep it to a minimum.

The easiest method of pond algae control is a good pump and filter system. For a typical water garden (mostly plants, maybe a few fish) a pump should be able to circulate at least half of the total volume of water in the pond, every hour. UV filters are often the most effective, but other filtration systems can work as well.

Pond algae control can also be achieved through a well thought out design and proper construction. Rainwater run off is a common cause of algae in a pond, and as such a water garden should be designed to avoid this hazard. Adding a skimmer is also a good way to reduce loose debris, which often leads to algae.
