Pond Aeration
In nature, ponds maintain their oxygen levels through
a constant flow of new water in the form of rainfall or streams. A body
of water that cannot replenish its oxygen becomes stagnant. Because
a water garden doesn’t not have a naturally occurring system of
oxygen replacement, pond aeration is usually necessary.
There are several methods of pond aeration. For a small pond, installing
a fountain can be a good way to replenish oxygen supplies. As water
from the bottom of the pond is pumped through the fountain, the water
mixes with the air before falling back into the pond, thereby adding
oxygen.
For larger ponds it is often necessary to purchase a dedicated pond
aeration system. These systems pump oxygen through a diffusing mechanism
which helps to create hundreds of thousands of tiny bubbles. The smaller
the bubbles, the more efficient the transfer of oxygen will be.
